How to read the dates. This archive is two archives wearing one
schema. The 10,478 legacy files carry no links and no read events: their date is the
publication date parsed out of a filename, so a quarter before 2012 says when the writing
appeared, not when it was read. The 5,952 Instapaper and Matter articles from 2012 on
carry real save and archive dates. Two thirds of the corpus, 10,665 articles, is dated by
that proxy. Every strip and step runs on one shared axis of quarters from 2005 Q1 to 2026 Q3, and the
amber lines are the average of each era, annotated with their value. There is no time of day
anywhere in this archive, so nothing here is drawn by hour.
